Bowie State Wi-Fi Problems

Wi-Fi Problems

By: Isaiah Glover

Study time on Jericho Park: A life at college and its essentials

Colleges’ essentials to function are libraries, professors and other students, but the new generation has added technology to these essentials. Students across the world now use the IPod or IPad to access the information needed for classes and other academic purposes. Due to the recent explosion of the internet and smart phone, companies have taken it upon themselves to make internet wireless. Colleges strive to keep as up-to-date as they can with building wireless hotspots on campuses, but with wireless connections though, come wireless problems.

Bowie State University is a dry campus, we all know. But does it have to be so dry to the point where the Wi-Fi connections cannot receive any juice? The wireless connection on campus is on the frits. The Bulldog Connection and Blackboard cannot be accessed on-time and when a professor posts last minute  pertinent information, and completion of assignments become almost permanently stifled.

If we negotiated a better contract with Blackboard, and made real tangible improvements to our network,  then the problems with the network would not be such a big problem. Yes, the solution seems so easy, yet the most pressing question is who is going to pay for it? The tuition for school has already raised another 2.8% average (although it may be argued that students did not receive any more values for the increase in tuition) and, by the looks of the current election polls, tuition will continue to increase at a steady pace no matter who gets elected. One must ask are the current difficulties with the on-campus Wi-Fi a real problem, and what should be done to correct this problem?

What is being done about the poor wireless connection services? Recently The Office of Information and Technology (OIT) was visited and questioned about the poor quality of wireless internet on campus. I was told that they already know and that all questions or concerns need be either emailed to the head of OIT or, mailed in. Last year when OIT was visited all that was needed was a complaint form filled out. I was pushed away as quickly as I came into the office. So my question still stands; WHAT IS BEING DONE TO HELP THE STUDENT BODY WITH WIRELESS CONNECTIONS?

The technology department seems to be stepping up, but what about the wireless connections. Is Cisco adequate enough to take on the challenges of providing wireless internet? Does OIT really give time to the recent wireless issues? Will these problems ever be changed? It is our, The Student Body’s, task to stand up for what we should have power to control. Start by coming to the planned student body meeting and express your concerns to your elected leaders (SGA) , and if that is not effective take things into your own hands.

The Junior Class Board Wants YOU!!

You have a once in a lifetime opportunity to join a vibrant, classy, hardworking , and effective group of individuals as part of the incoming Junior Class Board. This past semester Erica Johnson was appointed incoming Junior Class President, and is currently filling critical positions on the Junior class board.  The positions she and her vice-president are currently seeking to fill are the following: Secretary, Treasurer, and the Team of Avengers ( Event Coordinators/ Promotions).  It is always an honor to serve you fellow classmates and peers, and President Johnson would like to afford the opportunity to a few select people to be apart of something great.  As a member of the Golden Girls and a former member of the Student Senate Ms. Johnson has made an impact on Bowie State, but is now seeking to expand that impact with the help of dynamic people. If you are intersted in filling one of the above mentioned positions on the Junior Class Board you may contact the Junior Class President at Erica.EMJ@gmail.com .

Time to Start Your Job Search

It is that time of year again! The school semester is almost over and summer is right upon us! It would be wrong us your friends at the Bulldog Collegian to not remind you to start your search now for that killer summer job. The old adage is true the early bird does get the worm, and well in this case the early looker gets the job of their choice rather than the only one available.  We have provided a few resources below to help you in your job search.

1.Career services

Located in the Wisemen student center, that are some fo the best at helping students find that killer summer job/internship that you are seeking. Every employer in the area that is seeking student help and contacts the university goes through them. It would serve you well to pay them a visit before it gets too hectic!

2. USAJOBS.GOV

The federal government is the largest employer in the world and always ahs opportunities and openings for students to fill. One of the highlights of the federal government is that you may just be able to land a job/internship in your field of study/choice rather than just another retail job at your local mall.  Jobs with the federal government also have tendencies to pay students more than other opportunities.

3. Job boards and search sites

Monster, snagajob.com and other website have tons of job listings. You should check out these boards and websites. They will serve you well.

You should start your search now for your summer job. While the economy may be recovering there is still a major shortage of jobs and opportunities, so it would serve you well to start looking now for the opportunity of your dreams.  You may just end up landing a position at the firm of your choice.
